Allison’s Art Auction Donation

A huge thank you goes out to Allison McNally, who presented Hillcrest with another generous donation last week for our Art Program. Over the past few years Allison has donated $880.25 to Hillcrest for the purchase for art supplies. The funds were raised as part of Allison’s annual Art Auction held at the West Gate Market. Allison was hoping to hold the auction last spring, however, due to COVID she was forced to postpone and modify the annual event. Allison currently attends Shuswap Middle School as a grade 6 student.

MDI Survey for Grade 5’s

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in Grades 5 and 8,

Once again, School District No. 83 has partnered with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC to invite Grades 5 and 8 students to take part in completing the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI). The MDI is a self-report questionnaire that asks children about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in school and in the community. The survey questions align with the BC Ministry of Education’s K-12 curriculum which includes a focus on promoting children’s personal and social competencies.

In previous years, students in Grades 4 and 7 have completed the questionnaire but this year, our district will be inviting students in Grades 5 and 8, so there is not overlap with the Grade 4 and 7 FSA assessments.

The questionnaire will be administered between January 11th and March 5th, 2021 at your child’s school.

An informed passive consent letter was emailed to you in November. The MDI is voluntary; your child can choose whether they would like to complete the questionnaire.

If you have any questions, please contact:

Scholastic Book Fair – Thank You!

Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair was a success! Thank you to all families, staff, and students who participated, supporting our school while enhancing home libraries.

Your purchases earned $351.80 in rewards that will be used to add new books to the Hillcrest library! Students are encouraged to suggest titles to Mrs. Reed.

Thank you again—and happy reading!

Festive Leadership Activities

Our grade 5 students have been busy planning some fun activities for the last week of school!

You can take part in all or any of these activities! We look forward to your creativity!

A (non-edible) Gingerbread House Building Contest

Bring your own NON-EDIBLE Gingerbread House! That’s right, we don’t want to leave food in the hallway on display. So you could use:

Cardboard, craft supplies, pipe cleaners, pom poms, paint, lego, popiscle sticks, nature, buttons, gems/glittery things, clay, play dough etc.

Houses can begin coming in on Monday Dec 14! They will be judged on Wednesday Dec 16!

An Ornament Making Contest

Design and make your own ornament that we can display on the Hillcrest Tree by the office! You can use the same supplies as above! You may begin hanging your ornaments on the tree on Monday Dec 14. They will be judged on Wednesday Dec 16. Good luck and have fun!

Ugly Christmas Sweater Day

On Wednesday Dec 16, show your festive spirit by wearing your favourite Christmas sweater! Bright, bold, tacky, embellished – the more the merrier! Students will also be participating in games with their class – this may take may different forms so please wait for further information from your child’s teacher.

Grade 4/5 Winter Film

In place of our annual winter concert our grade 4 and 5 students were making a movie last week under the dirction of Mr. Roberts, Mrs. Menzies, and local film maker Steven Ingle! Kudos to all of our students and staff on an outstanding team effort. We are hoping to share the video with the Hillcrest Community later next week!
