Ready, Set, Learn at Hillcrest Elementary

On Tuesday, February 4, 2026, families were welcomed into the Hillcrest Elementary School library for an engaging Ready, Set, Learn (RSL) event. Nineteen young children—along with a few babies—joined in the fun, supported by families, school staff, and community partners.

The library was transformed into an early learning hub, filled with hands‑on activity stations that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and playful exploration. Children sorted colourful pom‑poms, wooden shapes, and loose parts into baskets and trays, building early numeracy concepts, problem‑solving skills, and fine motor coordination through open‑ended play.

Creative tables were buzzing with activity as children drew, glued, designed, and proudly shared their artwork with family members. Across the room, imaginative play took place as children made up games with play characters, small toys, and loose materials, turning everyday objects into exciting opportunities for learning.

Books and early literacy supports were woven throughout the space, inviting children to browse picture books and participate in activities that sparked conversation and a love of reading.

Community connections were strengthened through the participation of a Public Health Nurse and Early Years Family Navigator, who connected with families and shared community resources.

Ready, Set, Learn is a free, province‑wide initiative offered through our District to support families with children ages three to five. The program creates opportunities for early learners to explore school environments, engage in playful learning, and connect with community and school‑based supports.
